Perimenopause vs. Menopause: What’s the Difference?

These two terms are often used interchangeably, but they mean very different things. At Be. Women’s Health in Frisco, TX, we make it simple.

Perimenopause:

The transition before menopause.
It can last 4–10 years and includes hormonal ups and downs, irregular cycles, and new symptoms like hot flashes, sleep issues, and mood changes.

Menopause:

Defined as 12 consecutive months without a period.
At this point, estrogen is consistently low and symptoms may stabilize or change.

What this means for you:

In perimenopause:
• Periods still happen, but unpredictably
• Symptoms may come in waves
• Hormone therapy may or may not be appropriate depending on cycle status
• You can still get pregnant

In menopause:
• No more periods
• Hormone therapy options expand
• Vaginal dryness, low libido, and sleep changes may persist
• Health screenings like bone density become more important

Understanding where you are in the transition helps us personalize care and bring relief sooner.
