How Often Should I Schedule a Gynecology Exam? Your Age-by-Age Guide
Your gynecology exam is more than a pelvic exam — it's your yearly wellness checkpoint. At Be. Women’s Health in Frisco, TX, we tailor recommendations to your life stage, so you always know what’s necessary and what’s not.
In your teens & early 20s:
Start visiting a gynecologist between ages 13–15, even if you’re not sexually active. These visits are mostly conversations, cycle questions, and building trust.
Age 21–29:
Most women need a pelvic exam every year and a Pap smear every 3 years (unless you’ve had abnormal results). Birth control counseling, STI testing, and cycle regulation often happen here.
Age 30–39:
Continue annual GYN exams with Pap/HPV co-testing every 5 years. This is also when we begin tracking fertility, thyroid health, and stress-related cycle changes.
Age 40–50:
Perimenopause starts sneaking in. Annual exams help us evaluate heavy bleeding, breast health, mood changes, sleep, and hormones.
50+ years:
Even after menopause, GYN care matters — including pelvic exams, bone health, sexual wellness, and cancer screening.
Your body changes, so your care should too.
